Na Cailleacha’s Nollaig na mBan
To mark this special day in the lives of women in Ireland and our friends everywhere, we want to celebrate the great impact of bel hooks on women’s lives, freedoms and achievements, and whose death at the age of 69 took place on Christmas Eve. For us, Cailleachs, she was not only an inspiring feminist she was also someone who respected and admired the older women in her own life. She took the name, bel hooks, from her grandmother for whom she had tremendous regard, deciding to user lower case letters for herself to distinguish between them. The world will be a poorer place without her.
Since Nollaig na mBan takes place on January 6th here are six statements she made that we think are worth sharing;-

“Love is an act of will–namely, both an intention and an action.”
“Do not expect to receive the love from someone else you do not give to yourself…The light of love is always in us, no matter how cold the flame. It is always present, waiting for the spark to ignite, waiting for the heart to awaken.”
“I believe wholeheartedly that the only way out of domination is love, … and the only way into really being able to connect with others, and to know how to be, is to be participating in every aspect of your life as a sacrament of love.”
So long as women are not free the people are not free. (Feminism is for Everybody) “Feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.” …females can be just as sexist as men. ….. “we need to be clear that we are all participants in perpetuating sexism until we change our minds and hearts, until we let go of sexist thought and action and replace it with feminist thought and action.”
